About

Professor Fa-Kuen Shieh

Brief bio

I had a wonderful time at Taipei YanPing High School from 1987 to 1990,
as I met someone who greatly influenced my life and shared lasting friendships with my classmates. Then, I received my bachelor's degree in
Chemistry in 1994 and my master's degree in Biochemistry in 1996 from
National Chiao-Tung University, Taiwan. Following two years of mandatory military service in the Taiwan Air Force and three years of teaching in a senior high school, I embarked on my doctoral journey as a Ph.D. student in the Department of Chemistry & Biochemistry at UC Santa Barbara (UCSB), USA, in 2002, under the supervision of Prof. Norbert O. Reich. During this time, I was fortunate to receive a three-year scholarship from the Ministry of Education, Taiwan, for overseas studies. After successfully earning my Ph.D. in Protein Crystallography in 2007, I transitioned to UC Los Angeles (UCLA), where I joined the laboratory of Prof. Robert T. Clubb for a one-year post-doctoral training at the Molecular Biology Institute.

In August 2008, I returned to Taiwan and joined the Department of Chemistry at National Central University (NCU) as an Assistant Professor. I am currently a Full Professor in Chemistry. My research focuses on developing nanostructured metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) using environmentally friendly synthetic methods, such as water-based and mechanochemical approaches. Our primary objective is to construct biocomposites, including enzymes@MOFs and bacteria@MOFs. In addition, we are actively advancing the emerging field of “MOF chemical biology,” which explores the behaviors and structural transformations of biomolecules encapsulated within MOFs.
